My Boy Phil Wins The Masters!

Phil Mickelson has won the 2010 Masters Golf Tournament! He birdied the 18th hole and shot a 67 in Sunday’s fourth round, winning the Masters by three strokes. When his tee shot landed behind a tree on the 13th hole, he selected his 6-iron and took a full swing, and his ball landed five feet from the pin.

In the press conference after the tournament, Phil was asked how the shot stacked up to the other clutch shots that he had made in other tournaments. He brushed off the question, saying the ball had a great lie in the pine needles, and there was a clear hole through the trees. When the press pushed him, he said he knew that he just “needed to trust my swing and take the shot.” Phil’s caddie, Jim “Bones” MacKay took it a step further. During an interview on the Golf Channel, Bones said that he and Phil were deciding whether he should hit a 5-iron or a 6-iron. He said that Phil looked at him and said, “Listen, it’s a six iron, just let me play it.”

Phil walked off the18th green right into the arms of his wife, Amy, who has been battling breast cancer for the last year. Phil said during the press conference that during the embrace no words were exchanged, but it was a special moment that they would cherish for the rest of their lives.

I think that so much of the press coverage coming into the Masters was focused on Tiger’s entry back into the game after his self-imposed exile after he cheated on his wife. It’s kinda nice to see the tournament end with a great guy winning his favorite tournament and celebrating with his wife and three children. And, I’m not alone in these thoughts. Thousands of Masters tweets on Twitter were all about how happy people were that Phil had won. I’m proud to say that I’m one of those very happy people!
